Niall Canavan was named Boston United captain on his debut for the National League side. The 35-year-old defender wore the armband in the 1-0 home defeat to Aldershot Town on Saturday.

Canavan joined Boston United after being released by Barrow at the end of the previous season, where he had served as captain for over four years. He spoke about being rescued from the footballing wilderness following an injury-plagued end to his time at Barrow.

Canavan played the full 90 minutes in Boston United's opening day fixture against Aldershot Town. Although the team lost 1-0, he expressed satisfaction with his personal contribution and availability to help the squad.

He stated: "I am probably not quite 100 per cent at it at the minute, so it might take a bit longer for me."

The veteran defender highlighted the club's infrastructure and the manager's reputation as key factors in his decision to sign. He praised the support he received during his rehabilitation process.

Canavan said: "The club have been good enough to take on some of my rehab work after what was a bit of a messy end to my time at my previous club over the summer, so that has been an absolute godsend for me."

Despite wearing the captain's armband, Canavan emphasized that leadership is a shared responsibility within the squad. He believes in leading by example rather than relying on symbolic gestures.

On the armband, he commented: "Having an armband on doesn't change the way I go about my business and what I am trying to do."

Canavan is one of three veteran players at Boston United this season and stressed the importance of experienced players in guiding younger teammates. He sees their role as key in maintaining perspective and professionalism.

He added: "There are some good old boys in there which I think is important in football as it's moving towards being a younger man's game. So to have those good role models and people to offer advice at different times is really important."

Boston United will look to build on their performance as they prepare for their next fixture, which can be viewed on our fixtures page. The squad details, including Canavan's squad number, are available on our squad page.
