Boston United's former striker Paul Cavell has passed away at the age of 63. Cavell served the Pilgrims across two spells as a player, from 1990 to 1992 and 1997-1998, and a stint as a member of the coaching staff in 2016. He had also appeared as a Matchday VIP on several occasions, most recently in November 2024 against former club Dagenham & Redbridge. In total, Cavell scored 42 goals in 107 appearances for the Pilgrims. Cavell began his career in the youth ranks for his local side, Worksop Town, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He made his first team debut at the age of 17, scoring in a 1-0 home win over Gainsborough Trinity at Central Avenue on 27th January 1982. Cavell was a key player for Worksop Town, scoring 13 goals in the Northern Premier League team the following season. He was top scorer in a season where re-election to the league was needed for the Tigers come May. Cavell's career took him to several clubs, including Goole Town, Stafford Rangers, and Dagenham, before returning to Boston United in 1997. A Boston spokesman said: “The thoughts of all at the club are with Paul's wife Julie and the family at this sad time.” Cavell's legacy at Boston United will be remembered for his contributions on and off the pitch. His coaching and scouting experience will also be cherished by the club. Cavell's passing has left a void in the Boston United community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
