Boston United conceded a 94th-minute goal to lose 2-1 to Southend United at Jakemans Community Stadium on Saturday. The defeat leaves Paul Hurst's side 21st in the National League table with 12 points from 13 games.
The lead was short-lived. A defensive error from the returning Jake Rooney allowed Southend to build an attack, and Paul Omochere levelled the scores in the 16th minute. Southend dominated the rest of the first half, exploiting the wings and repeatedly getting behind the home defence.
Hurst's changes
Manager Paul Hurst made six changes for the match, welcoming Rooney back from suspension and three players from international duty. The team had trained for six straight days in preparation. While the second-half performance improved, with United holding their own for long periods, they were unable to convert their chances into a winning goal. The visitors capitalised deep into added time, with substitute S. Kamara scoring the decisive goal from close range.
"Having held their own after the break, I felt they deserved something from the game," said David Ward. The late loss compounds a difficult run of form, with the team now having lost two and drawn one of their last three league matches.
The result sees Boston United remain in the relegation zone, now 23 points behind leaders Boreham Wood. Their recent results include a 6-0 thrashing at Yeovil Town and a 1-1 draw with FC Halifax Town. The squad's current standings position shows the need for points. Next up is a trip to face 17th-placed Eastleigh on October 24th, a key match in their battle to climb the table. Hurst will hope to have his full squad available for that fixture as they seek to end this winless streak.
